Every year thousands of British people are detained in over 100 countries – often in horrific conditions which can cause severe physical and mental suffering. We assist British citizens during their incarceration and when they return to the UK, and we also support their family and friends throughout the trauma.
Prisoners Abroad is the only UK charity caring for British citizens in this way. Our services provide a lifeline to 1,700 prisoners a year, many of whom face extreme isolation and malnutrition. We support over 1,500 family members in the UK, helping them to better cope with the ordeal of having a loved one in prison overseas. We also provide a crisis service for over 150 ex-prisoners each year, who arrive in the UK with nothing and nowhere to go, to ensure they have a place to live and help to get back on their feet.
We are non-judgmental and provide assistance regardless of the stage of the legal process or the verdict, because we believe that people in prison should retain their human rights and dignity – wherever they are in the world, whatever their sentence.
